Analysis and control of novel split-winding doubly salient permanent magnet motor for adjustable speed drive

A new stator hybrid excited doubly salient (HEDS) machine with a special saturated magnetic bridge is presented, which combines the advantages of permanent magnet machines with the possibility of controllable magnetic flux by auxiliary DC field windings. The design details and analysis of a 12/8-pole HEDS machine has been presented. The capability of flux control is obtained by using finite element analysis (FEA). In addition, an overall assessment on the influence of the DC field winding is also carried out, in which the relationship between the flux weakening ability and the extended speed range in constant power operation is deduced for the first time. A 12/8-pole HEDS motor has been built for evaluation. Experimental results of the prototype machine are given to verify the theoretical analysis. Both experimental results and FEA show that the proposed machine not only offers the advantages of a doubly salient permanent magnet machine, but also a special ability of the flux control, which is essential for electric vehicle (EV) applications.

In this paper, a new hybrid excited doubly salient stator-permanent-magnet motor is proposed, where both permanent magnets and DC field windings are located in the stator. In theory, the mathematical model and design method of the motor are developed. The corresponding output power equation and the relationship between the flux control capability and the extended speed range are deduced in details. By using an efficient "one-step" three-dimensional (3D) finite element method, the electromagnetic performances are analyzed, in which the leakage flux outside the stator circumference and end-effect are taken into account. Based on the operation principle of the motor, the control strategy and scheme are developed and implemented experimentally. The conventional doubly salient permanent magnet (DSPM) machine has concentrated windings in stator and unipolar flux linkage. This paper presents a novel single phase DSPM generator with full-pitched winding, offering higher efficiency and less copper consumption. The static characteristics of the proposed DSPM generator are analyzed based on the finite element method. It is shown that the full-pitched DSPM generator holds bipolar flux linkage, while the power output capacity keeps the same as the concentrated winding configuration. The power density of the full-pitched DSPM generator may be further improved by extending the permanent magnet (PM) into the stator slot and adding DC excited winding, respectively. The improved full-pitched DSPM generator may be used in the application for wind power generation.
