Analysis and design of tapered slot antenna with high gain for ultra‐wideband based on optimisation of the metamaterial unit layout

Abstract: To further develop the advantages of loading artificial material units, layout rules of unit cells were investigated and presented for the first time in this study. Based on the analysis of transmission characters of metamaterial unit cells, some tapered slot antennas loaded with different unit layouts were designed. The result comparison showed that after the layout optimisation, the operation frequency band with a gain above 10 dB increased by about 13% and the gain increased by 0.4–2.6 dB in the high freque… Show more

“…enhances antenna gain in a narrow band due to its resonant characteristic. High permittivity material composed by nonresonant unit cells can improve antenna gain in a broadband . The principle of this method is to obtain equivalent refractive index of the unit cell greater than that of the air.…”

“…Based on the operation theory of the ETSA, Gazi proposed the antipodal Vivaldi antenna (AVA), which used the transition of microstrip line to symmetric double sided slot line and extended the impedance bandwidth. However, its gain within the operation band was low and the maximum gain was no more than 8 to 9 dBi …”

“…In recent years, several methods have been proposed to improve the gain of Vivaldi antennas . By loading tapered and rectangular slots on the AVAs, the gains were improved, but the antenna sizes were large.…”
