Analysis and Mitigation of Power Quality Issues in Distributed Generation Systems Using Custom Power Devices

Abstract: This paper discusses the power quality issues for distributed generation systems based on renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind energy. A thorough discussion about the power quality issues is conducted here. This paper starts with the power quality issues, followed by discussions of basic standards. A comprehensive study of power quality in power systems, including the systems with dc and renewable sources is done in this paper. Power quality monitoring techniques and possible solutions of the power… Show more

“…various schemes such as static var-compensation (SVC) [35], the static reactive power compensator (STATCOM) [36], and the power balance theory (PBT). A passivity based control (PBC) is mentioned as a suitable control strategy for an unbalanced voltage condition [37].…”

“…The present research on the accessible capacity of the distributed power sources has yielded certain results. The authors of [33] proposed a method for calculating the admission capacity based on the dynamic load security domain, and analyzed the impact of different load levels and of the location of the distributed power grids on the accessible capacity. The authors of [34] established a distributed power supply capacity optimization model considering the current protection constraints of the distribution network, and made an intelligent algorithm to solve the model.…”

“…There are other natural causes for PQ problems such as flashover, electronic equipment failure, and lighting. In general, PQ problems are voltage sag and swell, flicker, harmonics, and notches . Among these PQ problems, voltage related disturbances such as voltage swell and voltage sag are very severe.…”
