Analysis of 4495 canine and feline uroliths in the Benelux. A retrospective study: 1994–2004

Abstract: From 1994 to 2004, Hill's Pet Nutrition received 4495 canine (65%) and feline (35%) uroliths from Benelux veterinary practitioners. They were sent to the Minnesota Urolith Center, USA for analysis. In 1994, 110 uroliths were analysed - 85% from dogs - and in 2003, 1067 uroliths were analysed - 59% from dogs. During this period, substantial changes were observed in composition. In 1994, 77% of the cats had uroliths composed of struvite, and 12% had uroliths composed of calcium oxalate. “…The fact that calcium excretion increases with age makes it a suspected predisposing factor (Lulich et al, 2013). Breeds found to be at a higher risk included, in partial agreement with the results of other studies, the Miniature Pinscher (Blavier et al, 2012), the Miniature Schanuzer (Blavier et al, 2012;Roe et al, 2012;Lulich et al, 2013), the York-shire Terrier (Picavet et al, 2007;Roe et al, 2012;Lulich et al, 2013) and the Miniature Poodle (Sosnar et al, 2005;Picavet et al, 2007).…”

“…Although increased susceptibility of the urinary tract to infection is suspected, the aetiology is still unknown. According to the results of our study, Shih Tzus and English Cocker Spaniels were found to be characterised by a high prevalence of struvite urolithiasis, similarly as it has been reported by others (Picavet et al, 2007;Rogers et al, 2011;Vrabelova et al, 2011;Blavier et al, 2012;Roe et al, 2012). However, our data showed significantly lower OR values in some other breeds regarded as breeds being at high risk for struvite urolithiasis such as the Miniature Schnauzer (Vrabelova et al, 2011;Roe et al, 2012) and the Dachshund (Sosnar et al, 2005).…”

“…O animal é um canino, macho, SRD, de três anos de idade. Segundo Picavet et al (2007) e Rogers (2011) a urolitíase é uma condição clínica importante que é mais recorrente em cães machos que em fêmeas devido às características anatô-micas de sua uretra, longa estreita e sinuosa. Podendo ocorrer obstrução principalmente na base do osso peniano (AQUI-NO et al, 2007).…”
