Analysis of Built-Up Areas of Small Polish Cities with the Use of Deep Learning and Geographically Weighted Regression

Abstract: Small cities are an important part of the settlement system, a link between rural areas and large cities. Although they perform important functions, research focuses on large cities and metropolises while marginalizing small cities, the study of which is of great importance to progress in social sciences, geography, and urban planning. The main goal of this paper was to verify the impact of selected socio-economic factors on the share of built-up areas in 665 small Polish cities in 2019. Data from the Database… Show more

“…Their capacity to store, retrieve, analyze, model, and map large areas with huge volumes of spatial data has led to an extraordinary proliferation of applications. Geographic information systems are now used for land use planning [20], utility management, ecosystem modeling, landscape assessment and planning, transportation and infrastructure planning [21], market analysis, visual impact analysis [22], facilities management, tax assessment, real estate analysis, and many other applications. For example, electric utilities can use GIS software to manage assets and outages, serve customers, facilitate field operations, and create situational awareness.…”

“…It constitutes a component of the Polish spatial data infrastructure and is publicly available through the following Web services: Web Feature Services (WFS) and Web Map Services (WMS) (Izdebski et al 2021). BDOT10k data are broadly used in land-use applications (Fiedeń 2019, Adamiak et al 2021. Landform analysis, particularly for slope, was conducted based on Digital Terrain Elevation Model (DTED) Level 2 with arc second (approximately 30 m) spatial resolution (USGS 2022).…”

“…By selecting relevant samples and training the model to explore non-linear relationships between influencing factors and geographical phenomena, ML can efficiently clarify the importance of each indicator to the sample data while minimizing errors caused by subjective experience and obtaining more objective and scientific indicator weights [40]. At present, ML-based weight determination methods have been applied in the indicator construction and composite assessment for purposes such as evaluating performance, detecting spatial patterns, and selecting locations [41], [42], [43]. Moreover, classification, evaluation, and simulation accuracy can be improved by support vector machine, random forest, extreme gradient boosting, and other related ML algorithms used in studies on land use/cover classification and urban sprawl simulation [44], [45].…”
