Analysis of Characteristics of and Use Value of Mangrove Ecosystem (Case Study in Samataring and Tongketongke Sub-Districts, Sinjai Regency)

Abstract: The study is performed in Samataring and Tongketongke sub-districts, East Sinjai District, Sinjai Regency, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. It aims at identifying species composition of mangrove vegetation, analyzing characteristics of mangrove ecosystem, and studying economic valuation of mangrove ecosystem. Identification on the three research sites found four types of mangrove vegetation by 86.53% Rhizophora, 7% Bruguira, 4.15% Avicennia, and 2.34% Senneratia; characteristics of mangrove ecosystem are absolute de… Show more

“…Semakin besar proporsi lahan untuk mangrove akan menghasilkan lebih banyak hasil samping dan manfaat ekologis bagi perairan di sekitarnya, namun produktivitas kultivan yang dibudidayakan justru semakin rendah. Sebaliknya, jika proporsi lahan untuk kolam tambak lebih besar maka fungsi ekologisnya semakin rendah (Sambu 2014).…”

“…Economic valuations of mangrove ecosystem in Samataring and Tongketongke sub-districts, South Sulawesi covers direct use value of Rp 48,303,875,-ha-1 year-1, indirect use value of Rp 3,338,650,-ha-1 year-1, alternative use value of Rp 142,500,-ha-1 year-1, and existence use value of Rp 3,917,722,-ha-1 year-1 (Sambu 2014). Meanwhile, correlation between mangrove ecosystem direct benefit value and increased coastal catch produce in Sinjai District, Sulawesi, Indonesia showed positively correlate and result in an equation of y = 0.485x -0.347 with R2 = 0.99 (Haris et al 2013).…”

“…Characteristics of mangrove vegetation in this study include (1) mangrove vegetation type, (2) mangrove vegetation density, (3) average tree height, (4) average tree diameter, and (5) type and shape root. Generally, the forms of mangrove root of each species are formed horizontally and vertically, thus crossed-cross mutually reinforcing each other to portray ecological functions to prevent coastal abrasion, trap sediments and pollutants, prevent saltwater interactions on land [3].…”
