Analysis of cobalt for human sports drug testing purposes using ICP‐ and LC‐ICP‐MS

Abstract: Due to the current demands in the fight against manipulation of blood and blood components, commonly referred to as “blood doping” in sports drug testing, specific and sensitive detection methods enabling the detection of prohibited substances and methods of doping are required. Similar to illicit blood transfusions, erythropoiesis stimulating agents have been shown to be misused in sport, aiming at improving an athlete's aerobic capacity and endurance performance. Amongst other strategies, the administration … Show more

“…Transforming growth factor (TGF)-β in murine milk plays a role in development of tolerance in the offspring ( 18 ). Epidermal growth factor (EGF) not only prevents dissemination of a gut-resident pathogen by inhibiting goblet cell-mediated bacterial translocation ( 19 ) but may also prevent food allergen uptake during breastfeeding, which may have implication for development of tolerance ( 20 ). Using human samples and infant cohorts, we have shown that human milk IgA controls excessive intestinal uptake of food antigens, which is associated with protection against food allergies in the offspring ( 21 ), as are higher levels of TGF-β1, along with IL-10 and IL-6 ( 22 ).…”

“…The instrument ICP-MS 7700x (Agilent Technologies, Waldbronn, Germany) was used. Measurements were performed as described (Knoop et al 2020 ). Urine samples (1 mL of each subject) were 5-fold diluted with 1% HNO 3 immediately before measurement.…”

“…Linear tetrapyrroles such as urobilin may also act as polydentate ligands. 47 Given that concentration of endogenous ligands can vary significantly from 49 Unlike CNCbl for which up to 70% of the dose is known to excrete in urine, 50,51 other cobalamins such as hydroxocobalamin (OHCbl), methylcobalamin (MeCbl), and adenosylcobalamin (AdoCbl)…”
