Analysis of Diglycolic Acid after Mass Poisoning by Diethylene Glycol

Abstract: In December 2019, unusual cases of acute renal failure with neurological changes were observed in the State of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Criminal investigations indicated cases of intoxication after consumption of beers contaminated with diethylene glycol (DEG). The elimination of DEG by the body is fast, but its metabolite, diglycolic acid (DA), may persist for a long time. To assess the level of intoxicated victims who consumed the contaminated beers, qualitative and quantitative methods were developed to determ… Show more

“…The cartridge was subsequently removed, and the solvent was transferred to a 2 mL vial and dried at room temperature under airflow. The dried extract was derivatized using 50 μL N,O‐Bis(trimethylsilyl)trifluoroacetamide with 1% trimethylchlorosilane (BSTFA/1%TMCS) for 20 min at 70°C as previously described for diglycolic acid by Goulart et al [17]. Derivatized samples were transferred to inserts post‐cooling and injected into the GC–MS/MS.…”

“…The variance was calculated with equation 5. (5) where j represents the j th result of the set of replicas i, and m is the number of replicas of the analytic response y at each point. That is, j ranged from 1 to 5 (5 points of the curve), and m was equal to 3 (analyses performed in triplicates).…”

“…4 In Brazil, a likely beer-manufacturing incident was reported, in which DEG used in the cooling process caused the intoxication and death of dozens of people. 5 Caldeira et al 4 analyzed some beer samples, including those considered contaminated, and found DEG in 8% of the samples. In that case, the cooling fluid had come into contact with the beer due to leakage from the coils.…”
