Building energy intensity (BEI) has been used to assess a building’s overall energy performance. However, the energy performance, CO2 footprint and electricity costs due to lighting in buildings are currently required to assist relevant authorities to develop, revise and implement energy-efficient lighting policies that are effective and acceptable for the country. This work presents an estimation approach for lighting in commercial buildings in Southeast Asia and its decarbonisation pathway for benchmarking. Application of this approach to a selected library in Brunei Darussalam showed that an energy-efficient light-emitting diode (LED) lighting system would make the building greener. We projected reductions in lighting energy consumption by 6.7 times (3.98 kWh/m2/year), its associated CO2 emissions by 8 times (0.59 kg CO2/m2/year) and electricity costs by 8.7 times (B$7.07/m2/year) by 2050 if existing lamps in the library are retrofitted with LED lamps.

Bangunan pejabat hijau menjadi konsep pembinaan pada masa kini bagi mengatasi masalah pencemaran. Pencemaran berlaku disebabkan oleh berbagai faktor, antaranya ialah pelepasan karbon daripada bangunan pejabat, iaitu kira- kira 80 – 90%. Kebelakangan ini, bangunan kerajaan di Malaysia kebanyakannya membebaskan jumlah karbon yang rendah selari dengan kesedaran tenaga mampan. Penggunaan sistem pendingin hawa terbantu terma-suria merupakan salah satu kaedah yang menyumbang kepada pengurangan penggunaan tenaga elektrik iaitu sebanyak 60% atau bersamaan 2.4 juta kg karbon dioksida (CO2) setahun yang dibebaskan ke udara selain dapat mengawal pencemaran udara di Malaysia. Justeru, kajian ini bertujuan untuk menilai pengagihan elektrik kepada sistem-sistem dan peralatan utama di bangunan pejabat, mentafsir corak penggunaan sistem pendingin hawa gabungan konvensional dan terbantu suria-terma di bangunan pejabat, serta menjalankan analisis tekno-ekonomi dan penilaian kitar hayat ke atas sistem pendingin hawa terbantu suria di bangunan pejabat. Kajian dijalankan di Ibu Pejabat Pembangunan Kemajuan Negeri Selangor (IPPKNS) yang terletak di Seksyen 14 Shah Alam yang menggunakan sistem pendingin hawa terbantu terma-suria. Sistem ini yang menggunakan radiasi suria sebagai sumber boleh diperbaharui bertindak sebagai sumber tenaga kepada sistem penyejukan di dalam bangunan dan seterusnya mengurangkan kos operasi pendingin hawa. Berdasarkan analisis penjimatan tenaga, kitar hayat yang diambil kira dalam jangka 20 tahun menunjukkan pulangan kos pendahuluan (Pay Back Period) selama sepuluh tahun dan kos operasi pendingin hawa dalam bangunan dapat dikurangkan sebanyak 5% setahun. Secara keseluruhannya, sistem pendingin hawa terbantu terma-suria ini berpotensi untuk dikomersialkan penggunaannya berikutan penjimatan yang ketara daripada segi kos dan kitar hayat sistem, serta mengurangkan pencemaran alam sekitar.

Verifying the effects of heat transfer towards the rise of temperature in certain spaces which impact air control and conditioning. Climate change affects the rise of environmental temperatures, with the humid and tropical Indonesia not exempt from its effects. Many church buildings in Semarang, Indonesia, of which were previously partial to natural ventilation, have now opted to rely on Air Conditioning in order to cool their indoor temperatures. As a result, electrical consumption is now at an all-time-high, with the absence of proper adjustments needed to anticipate heat transfer from the outdoors from entering these buildings. Aside from skyrocketing expenses spent on electrical bills, the rise in energy consumption is also partial to uncontrollable energy waste. This research aims to provide a guide in designing the walls of church buildings, in order to reduce massive electrical consumption. Methods used in this research are calculations done through the software Psi-Therm as well as making considerations regarding Overall Thermal Transfer Value (OTTV) in order to provide the big picture of controllable thermal conductivity through church wall design. Research results entail a design model of heat transfer flow obstruction which will be beneficial for future church designs.
