In this study we compared three overland flow models, a full dynamic model (shallow water equation), a local inertial equations model (gravity wave model), and a diffusive wave model (parallel diffusive wave model). The three models are coupled with the same full dynamic sewer network model (SIPSON). We adopted the volume exchange between sewer and overland flow models, and the hydraulic head and discharge rates at the linked manholes to evaluate differences between the models. For that purpose we developed a novel methodology based on RGB scale. The test results of a real case study show a close agreement between coupled models in terms of the extents of flooding, depth and volume exchanged, despite highly complex flows and geometries. The diffusive wave model gives slightly higher maximum flood depths and a slower propagation of the flood front when compared to the other two models. The local inertial model shows to a slight extent higher depths downstream as the wave front is slower than the one in the fully dynamic model. Overall, the simplified overland models can produce comparable results to fully dynamic models with less computational cost.

Abstract:In a context of high uncertainty of hydro-climatic variables, the development of updated methods to assess climate change impacts is as important as the provision of improved climate change data. This paper presents the impacts of climate change on the flooding problems concerning a critical area of Barcelona: the Raval district. For this purpose a specific study tackling climate change influence on extreme precipitation in Barcelona and a detailed 1D/2D coupled model were used. Once the model was developed and calibrated, several scenarios of adaptation measures were considered to cope with climate change effects for the 2050 horizon. Results concerning these scenarios were compared to a defined "Business as usual scenario". Climate change impacts were assessed in terms of flood hazard and risk maps concerning vehicular and pedestrian circulation for several return periods (1, 10 and 100 years) for all the considered scenarios. Additionally direct tangible damages were estimated using depth-damage curves. Combining hazard and vulnerability levels by using a GIS-based toolbox, the expected annual damage of the area is obtained. By undertaking a cost-benefit analysis, the effectiveness of the strategies is assessed, and a prioritization of the most adequate ones for each scenario is carried out.

Pluvial flooding in urban areas may derive from the limited or temporarily reduced efficiency of surface drainage, even when the underlying storm sewers are properly designed. This study focuses on the impact of uncertainties in the operational condition of the surface drainage system on pluvial flood hazard. The flood propagation model FLURB-2D is implemented on a selected study area in the town of Genoa (Italy). Synthetic hyetographs based on the Chicago and bivariate copula methods with suitable return periods are used as input. While simulating the design rainfall, inlet operational conditions are varied stochastically using a Monte Carlo approach. Results confirm that microtopography has the potential to impact the efficiency of surface drainage and consequently to produce local flooding, with significant water depth in zones of flow concentration. Furthermore, the derived inundation maps allow the highlighting of areas with insufficient design of the surface drainage system (inlet size and positioning)
