Maternal nutrition status during pregnancy highly contributed to risk factors of stunting among children. Bone ossification approximately begins in the sixth weeks of embryonic development and continues to the end of pregnancy. However, inadequate nutrient supply in pregnant women harmed fetal growth. The study aimed to identify the association between pregnant women’s nutrition status and stunting. The case-control study using the retrospective design involved mothers with children aged 12-59 months. A proportional random sampling technique was applied to select participants. The sample was 80 toddlers, divided into 40 stunted, and 40 non-stunted toddlers. Data were taken from 27 April to 3 May 2019 through observations following the Mother and Child Health handbook and children's height. Weight gain calculation during pregnancy determined the maternal nutrition status, referred to as maternal pre-pregnancy body mass index. The univariate analysis used frequency distribution, while bivariate analysis used the chi-square test. This study obtained approval from The Health Research Ethics Committee of the Institute of Health Science of General Achmad Yani, Cimahi. The mothers' poor nutritional status caused as many as 85% of stunted toddlers' prevalence during pregnancy. Results showed that maternal nutritional status during pregnancy was significantly associated with stunting among children (p-value: 0.000). The OR value was 13,222, which means children born to mothers with inadequate nutrient supply during pregnancy were more likely to be stunted as much as 13,222 times, than children born to mothers who had good nutrient supply. It is recommended that health workers prevent stunting from pregnancy by providing supplementary food to pregnant women, and promoting the health of the maternal nutritional status during pregnancy. Suggestions for pregnant women is to increase nutrient intake and nutritional status during pregnancy to prevent stunting in children.

Stunting becomes one of the prior nutritional problems in Bangka Belitung Islands Province, especially West Bangka Regency with a high stunting rate. Feeding habit in children will continuously influence nutrition fulfillment that will directly affect the incidence of stunting. This study aimed at identifying the correlation between feeding habit (beliefs, feeding practices, and children’s eating behavior and the incidence of stunting in children under five years in West Bangka Regency. This was a quantitative study with across-sectional approach. The total sample was 186 respondents taken using a consecutive sampling technique. The instruments for data collection were height measuring instrument, height-for-age graphic according to WHO 2006 to see the z-score and the under-five children’s characteristics questionnaire, a questionnaire of food beliefs, feeding practices questionnaire (CFQ), and child eating behaviour (CEBQ). The analysis in this study used a Chi-Square test. The result showed that there was a significant correlation between child eating behavior and the incidence of stunting in children under five in West Bangka Regency with a p-valueof 0.001 (p<0.05) and an OR of 4.89. It indicates that the low eating behavior in children under five has a possibility of 4.89 times higher to experience stunting than the high eating behavior. Also, there is no correlation between mothers’ beliefs and feeding practices with the incidence of stunting (p-value of 0.2 & 0.7 respectively). This study is expected to form a peer group for the community of under-five children’s families to prevent and improve the children’s nutritional status and development optimally.

Stunting is one of the health problems in Indonesia. The cause of stunting is inadequate intake of nutrients which will have an impact on physical growth, motor and mental development, as well as intelligence, socio-emotional values. Mothers who have stunted children experience different experiences. This causes different perceptions about the causes of stunting for mothers. This study uses a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach. The purpose of the study was to explore the experience of mothers caring for children who experience stunting. The research was conducted in Banyumas Regency. The informants involved were 15 mothers who had stunted children aged 25-60 months. The research resulted in one of the themes, namely the causes of stunting for mothers. The themes consist of heredity categories, difficult children/picky eaters, children's health conditions, and financial conditions. According to the informant, heredity is the main cause of stunting, so it is assumed that stunting cannot be prevented. This shows the need for adequate information for informants about the factors that cause stunting. Mothers need counseling and supervision to increase their knowledge and ability in caring for children, especially in meeting nutritional needs.Â
