Analysis of Flow Characteristics and Effects of Turbulence Models for the Butterfly Valve

Abstract: In the present study, the flow characteristics of butterfly valves with different sizes DN 80 (nominal diameter: 76.2 mm), DN 262 (nominal diameter: 254 mm), DN 400 (nominal diameter: 406 mm) were numerically investigated under different valve opening percentages. Representative two-equation turbulence models of two-equation k-epsilon model of Launder and Sharma, two-equation k-omega model of Wilcox, and two-equation k-omega SST model of Menter were selected. Flow characteristics of butterfly valves were exami… Show more

“…This FLUENT is capable of simulating the complicated turbulent properties within mixing process of liquid and species with turbulent models. As a two‐equation turbulence model, the standard k − ε model in FLUENT has become the panacea of practical engineering flow simulation (Choi et al, 2021; Jaworski & Zakrzewska, 2002; Kositgittiwong et al, 2013; Liu et al, 2016; Noume et al, 2021; Papoutsis‐Kiachagias et al, 2014) since it was proposed by Launder and Spalding (Launder & Spalding, 1972), because it is robust, efficient, and adequately accurate for a wide range of turbulent flows, making itself frequently seen in industrial flow simulations. Therefore, the standard k − ε model was used in this study.…”

“…Tang et al [12,13] examined the flow characteristics of valves. In addition, Kim et al [14] assessed the impact of commonly used turbulence models on the flow characteristics of Processes 2022, 10, 1504 2 of 18 butterfly valves with various diameters. Qiu et al [15] used a multiphase cavitation model to investigate the pressure drop and cavitation characteristics of a sleeve-type control valve under various differential pressures and spool displacements.…”
