Analysis of growth curves of Guinea fowl (Numida meleagris) fed diets containing dry oregano (Origanum vulgare L.) in an organic system

Abstract: H. Eleroğlu, A. Yıldırım, A. Canikli, M. Duman, and H. Bircan. 2018. Analysis of growth curves of Guinea fowl (Numidea meleagris) fed diets containing dry oregano (Origanum vulgare L.) in an organic system. Cien. Inv. Agr. 45(2): 99-108. In this study, 240 day-old guinea fowl (Numida meleagris) keets were utilized. They were divided into four treatment groups each containing 20 chicks and were randomly distributed into 12 mobile coops placed in a 100-m 2 grazing area. Guinea fowl chicks were randomly allocated… Show more

“…As can be seen, weight at maturity (A) was very similar between treatments, ranging from 5.6 kg to 6.0 kg. This is probably because different diets could only influence the growth rate of animals (K) but not the weight at maturity (Eleroğlu et al, 2018). The parameter A (5.825 kg) determined in the present study differed from obtained by Vargas et al (2020), who evaluated the growth of Cobb 500 male broilers using the Gompertz model and obtained a maximum weight of 8.416 kg.…”

“…In agreement with Aggrey (2002), genetics, sex, and nutrition are the main factors acting in animal growth. Over the years, the improvement in nutrition was able to produce different responses on the feed efficiency of birds and shorten the period to achieve the maximum weight, changing the rate to reach maturity (K) (Eleroğlu, Yildirim, Canikli, Duman, & Bircan, 2018). In this way, evaluating the impact of different nutritional management on broiler growth allows to define the best nutritional plan for maximum performance, and it is possible to verify the impact of different ingredients and additives on bird growth.…”

“…Also, these models are used in breeding to have information about the situations such as performing predictions about future, selecting broods and evaluating health (Colak et al, 2006). To model the growth in poultry, the growth curve models such as Brody, Gompertz, Logistic, vonBertalanffy and Richards are used commonly (Zhao et al, 2015;Alkan and Birgul, 2017;Michalczuk et al, 2016;Demuner et al, 2017;Eleroglu et al, 2018).…”
