Analysis of Height-to-Width Ratio of Commercial Streets with Arcades Based on Sunshine Hours and Street Orientation

Abstract: By extracting and simplifying the characteristics of commercial streets with arcades (Qilou) in Nanning, the tissue map of Qilou streets which reflects the urban morphology, including the road network form, block scale, building scale and other characteristics in a hot and humid area is obtained. In addition, the sunshine simulation is performed by using sunshine design software in an environment comprising streets with arcades to simulate street sunlight environments under various conditions. The relationship… Show more

“…The best general solution seems to be the use of irregular road runs, in which the orientation changes from time to time, creating a balanced thermal environment. In addition, it is worth using diagonal streets [ 264 , 324 ]. In warmer temperate climates, the orientation of the roads along the N–S axis is suggested as the most appropriate [ 253 , 281 ].…”

“…In warmer temperate climates, the orientation of the roads along the N–S axis is suggested as the most appropriate [ 253 , 281 ]. In this situation, it is worth ensuring a considerable height of the canyon [ 222 , 324 ]. One can also reasonably increase the streets’ width to provide better comfort of their use [ 322 ].…”

“…At the end of the 19th century, many qilou shopping streets were built in Guangzhou, Wuzhou, Haikou, Nanning, and other Lingnan regions, all of which boasted flourishing trade and rapid economic development. Some negative effects are that micro-climates in qilou streets have higher air temperature and lower air velocity than their surroundings [5], which is referred to as the heat island effect [6]. The qilou streets and their pavements trap a lot of solar energy daily and emit it at night.…”
