Analysis of international shipping emissions reduction policy and China’s participation

Abstract: In addressing climate change, the shipping industry, which is regarded as one sector that cannot be ignored in controlling greenhouse gas emissions, has become a key area of concern for the international community to achieve emissions reduction targets. The International Maritime Organization—the body that regulates international shipping—as well as the European Union and other international entities have adopted a series of emissions reduction policies, beginning a new era of shipping emissions reduction. “…This virtuous cycle allows shipping companies to secure the time and resources needed to respond to various environmental regulations and invest in green technologies of IMO to meet carbon emission reduction targets. In addition, it enhances their competitiveness in the global shipping market and seizes the opportunity to contribute to promoting green technology innovation and development [51]. Therefore, the government should diversify the monopoly on LNG supply in Korea Gas Corporation to ensure price competitiveness and expand opportunities for shipping companies to promote the transition to green marine fuels by sustaining LNG prices in the green fuel market at reasonable levels.…”

“…This interest is driven by its energy density, which is similar to that of lowgrade coal (Valera-Medina et al, 2018), and its inherent carbonfree nature, making it an ideal zero-emission fuel (Alfa Laval et al, 2020). Such an inherent characteristic is crucial for the maritime transport industry, which currently accounts for approximately 2.89% of global greenhouse gas emissions (Liu et al, 2023). Recently, the International Maritime Organization has set a target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from this industry by 70% from 2008 levels by 2050 (IMO, 2018).…”
