Analysis of N -nitrosodiethylamine by ion chromatography coupled with UV photolysis pretreatment

Abstract: Nitrosamines such as N-nitrosodiethylamine (NDEA) are commonly detected by spectrophotometry after photolysis and Griess reaction (PG) in food industries for lower cost. Results of this research indicate that NDEA decays rapidly under UV irradiation, and concentrations of the generated NO and NO ions vary with photolysis conditions. Thus, the measurement of the PG method may be inconsistent because it is based on the amount of photoproduced NO. In addition, more errors may be present in the PG method since NO … Show more

“…However, it has proven to be a threat to human health. In fact, nitrite is an essential precursor of carcinogenic N -nitrosamines, which can result in serious health issues even at very low concentrations [ 62 , 63 ]. Furthermore, nitrite can interfere with the oxygen transport system and may result in methaemoglobinaemia, which can cause tissue hypoxia and, possibly, death [ 59 , 63 ].…”

“…Few studies investigated the treatment of NDEA in drinking water and wastewater streams connected with carbon capture. [19,20] Reverse osmosis and treatment using direct UV light were employed in the treatment of NDEA and NDMA. [21] Fenton mechanism for the decomposition of NDMA and NDEA was also employed with emphasis on the nitric oxide formation.…”
