Analysis of narrowband power line communication channels for advanced metering infrastructure

Abstract: This paper analyzes the characteristics of narrowband power line communication (NB-PLC) channels and assesses their performance when used for advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) communications. This medium has been traditionally considered too hostile. However, the research activities carried out in the last decade have shown that it is a suitable technology for a large number of applications. This work provides a statistical characterization of NB-PLC channels in the CENELEC-A band. The presented results h… Show more

“…This is shown in Table II where the average ACG, RMS-DS and CB are reported for different bands and scenarios. Data were obtained from [62], [69], [66], [70] (NB-PLC measurements in Indian and Chinese sites), [71] (for the CENELEC-A band of 3-95 kHz). The NB channel characterization has been less documented than the BB one, especially for the outdoor scenario.…”

“…The general technical idea of Power Line Communication (PLC) is to modulate a radio signal with data and sends it through power lines in a band of frequencies which are not used for supplying electricity [34]. The used frequencies and the modulation scheme have a significant influence on the efficiency and the speed of the PLC service [11]. One of the modulation schemes among others used for voice and data communication over power line communication is Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM).…”
