Aluminum-free Ni-incorporated MFI zeolite materials were synthesized in a batch reactor under mild reaction conditions using the hydrothermal method and were proven to exhibit highly active sites for the saturation of aromatics and olefinic molecules due to the high dispersion of the Ni species. The synthesized solid materials were characterized by various methods, and computational modeling aided in understanding the Ni dispersion in the MFI framework. The novelty of this study is corroborated to the unprecedented hydrogenation activity of the Ni-MFI materials when tested with a 1-octene model molecule at 0.48 MPa H2 pressure and moderate temperatures (423–473 K). Another important aspect of this work is the significant elimination of olefinic molecules from a sulfur-rich industrial cracked naphtha feedstock when using extrudates of the same material, which enforces that Ni-MFI could be commercially applied in industry for the selective hydrogenation of olefins present in light petroleum streams.

Abstract -The development of combinations of liquid chromatography with mass spectroemtry in an on line fashion has come to a stage where such combinations become part of routine procedures for the analysis of a broad variety of samples. Since several technically very different interfaces have been devised in recent years, the major types are briefly discussed, even though it becomes more and more clear that only a few will survive. The most outstanding device appears to be the atmospheric pressure sources with electrospray and chemical ionization, since it covers many areas of chemical analysis in terms of polarity, lability and molecular weights. The attempt has been made not only to give a picture of the techniques, but to indicate by means of a few examples, how useful the different devices are and where they are at their limits. Furthermore, the criteiia are indicated which may be applied to make a choice on the basis of analytical requirements and technical and financial possibilities.

Two vacuum residues were delivered from two different petroleum refineries, one from Suez Petroleum Company and the second from Alexandria Petroleum Company. They were subjected to solvent extraction using n-pentane, n-heptane, and ethyl acetate. The process of solvent extraction aims to separate maltenes and asphaltenes. The maltenes were further subjected to liquid chromatography (column chromatograph) in order to separate them into saturates and aromatics (mono-, di-, and poly-) and resins. The saturates that were separated from the maltenes of the two vacuum residues with different solvents were studied by gas chromatography in order to determine how much n-paraffins and cyclo-paraffins they contained.
