Analysis of Photodegradation Process of Pinus sylvestris L. Wood after Treatment with Acid and Alkaline Buffers and Light Irradiation

Abstract: The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the effect of acid and alkaline treatment of pine wood on photodegradation. The work presented here deals with changes in the wood colour and infrared spectrum caused by UV light. The colour changes were monitored with a reflectance spectrophotometer. The analysis of the colour changes in wood surfaces was carried out by measuring CIE L*a*b* parameters. Infrared spectroscopy was used to study chemical changes occurring on the surface of wood samples caused by l… Show more

“…Using the percentages of the wood ingredients holocellulose and lignin, their ratio (H/L) can be calculated. The H/L ratio is a valuable measurement to analyze the state of preservation [3,56,57]. This ratio was calculated from the available data.…”

“…7.6 Colour changes in wood exposed to solar UV radiation correlate well with the extent of lignin photodegradation UV-induced degradation of the lignin in wood exposed to solar radiation results in yellowing. 370 The surface yellowness index and the extent of lignin degradation (measured spectroscopically) during solar UV-induced degradation in several hardwood species were found to be correlated. [371][372][373] Since colour measurements are more convenient, they could be used as a good surrogate for detecting changes in the surface chemistry of weathered wood.…”

“…Today, the ancient village is entirely reconstructed and is an open-air museum, and the archeological wood is kept underground. In order to replicate some of the main causes of wood degradation found at the site (Babiński et al, 2006; Zborowska et al, 2006; Waliszewska et al, 2007; Tamburini et al, 2015), pine ( Pinus sylvestris ) and oak ( Quercus sp.) wood samples were put into lake water and peat and then removed from the burial environment after 4, 6, 8 and 10 years.…”
