Analysis of precipitation extremes based on satellite (CHIRPS) and in situ dataset over Cyprus

Abstract: A study of a daily precipitation database for the island of Cyprus is performed for a period of 30 years. A number of climatic indices for precipitation are calculated using the recently available CHIRPS dataset, on high spatial (0.05°) and temporal (daily) resolution. The same parameters for the same time period are then calculated using the dense network of rain gauges of the Cyprus Department of Meteorology. The results show a quite promising performance regarding indices related to daily precipitation thr… Show more

“…To date, precipitation observation networks are sparse or nonexistent in many parts of the TP due to the complex terrain, harsh climate, and high cost [7]. Satellite precipitation products are practical means of detecting rainfall distribution over vast regions that are poorly gauged, and provide a potential complementary source beyond ground in situ data [8,9].…”

“…CHIRPS dataset has also been used it to obtain a comprehensive evaluation of eight high spatial resolution precipitation products in an Alpine catchment, the Adige Basin in Italy [24], and to validate a hydrological model to simulate stream flow in a complex topography [25]. Additionally, the same database was successfully used for the analysis of precipitation extremes over Cyprus [26] and Bhutan [27].…”
