Analysis of professional competencies for the clinical research data management profession: implications for training and professional certification

Abstract: The results document the scope of the profession and will serve as a foundation for the next revision of the Certified Clinical Data Manager TM exam. A clear articulation of professional competencies and necessary foundational knowledge could inform the content of graduate degree programs or tracks in areas such as clinical research informatics that will develop the current and future clinical research data management workforce.

“…The recognition of the pivotal role of competencies in the labour market has attracted an abundance of scientific interest, aimed at investigating the fit between employees' competencies and job demands in different work domains. Competence studies in different contexts and settingsfrom big companies (Osagie et al, 2016) to small horticultural enterprises (Mulder et al, 2007), and from agricultural extension instructors (Karbasioun et al, 2007) to workers in the field of clinical research informatics (Zozus et al, 2017) or correctional staff (Harper, 2016) indicate the existence of a broad spectrum of competencies needed to become a successful professional. Nevertheless, research in this area tends to focus on subjects' competencies in their current work environments.…”

“…Sampling among participants at an international science conference offers the opportunity to address a globally distributed population of a specific profession that has a specific research focus. That sampling approach has been successfully employed in empirical research, especially in the areas of health and medicine (Pezold et al, 2016 ; Zozus et al, 2017 ). Rigorous peer-review processes affecting all contributions to the AoM conference ensured that those involved were active research scholars who authored research presented at the conference.…”

“…18 A data steward working in a research group or similar research environment with data management is here referred to as embedded data steward. These domain-specific data stewards are primarily used in data-intensive research within health sciences 19 and natural sciences 20 and specialize in data management in a single discipline. An editorial from Nature Genetics 21 starts with a clear statement regarding data stewardship, asserting that, "professional data stewards be trained and employed in all data-rich research projects, [which] raises the exciting prospect they will conduct research on data-intensive research itself."…”
