Analysis of psychometric features of the Mini-Mental State Examination and the Montreal Cognitive Assessment methods

Abstract: Abstract:This study aim was to analyse selected psychometric features of the Mini-Mental State Exam (MMSE) and the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) methods. The Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) was developed to enable earlier detection of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) relative to familiar multi-domain tests like the Mini-Mental State Exam (MMSE). Clinicians need to better understand the relationship between MoCA and MMSE scores. The analysis was performed on a sample of 84 geriatric patients. We have … Show more

“…According to international standards, a score of 18–23 indicates mild cognitive impairment, 16–17 indicates moderate cognitive impairment, and ≤15 indicates severe cognitive impairment (Karuza et al, 1997). Cronbach's alpha of the internal consistency reliability for the Mini‐Mental State Examination was 0.78 in a previous study (Kabátová et al, 2016) and 0.80 in this study.…”

“…This tool was used because it incorporates both objective physiological measures and subjective psychosocial measures of SA. Those components were based on the Katz Index, the Lawton and Brody scale 16,17 , and the Folstein 18 . Besides, some items related to the older person's perception of their future, their health and loneliness, were included in the study.…”

“…(41) Internal consistency of MMSE assessed with Cronbach's alpha of 0.78 with a specificity of 70% and sensitivity of 88%. (42) For dementia, screening used a threshold of < 21 in individuals with a basic education level and < 23 for individuals with higher education levels, and < 24 for individuals with a bachelor's degree level. Its usefulness in detecting mildmoderate cognitive dysfunction in SLE patients is still limited as the initial design of this instrument is intended for dementia screening.…”

“…(41) The internal consistency of the MoCA method using Cronbach's alpha is 0.81. (42) HVLT-R measures verbal learning abilities as well as short-term and long-term verbal memory. HVLT-R assesses the efficiency of verbal learning, the ability to access newly learned information, and retention.…”
