The resurgence of biofuels in the recent past has brought new perspectives for renewable energy sources. Gradually the optimistic scenarios were being challenged by the competition for raw materials dedicated to direct or indirect human food. Second-generation biorefineries have emerged as technological alternatives to produce biofuels from lignocellulosic biomass. The third generation of biorefineries uses alternative raw materials like algae and microalgae. Despite the technical feasibility, these biorefineries were indebted for their economic performance. Synthetic biology has provided new microbial platforms that are increasingly better adapted to industrial characteristics to produce biofuels and fine chemicals. Synthetic biology bioengineers microorganisms to take advantage of the low-cost and less-noble raw materials like lignocellulosic biomass, carbon dioxide, and waste as a sustainable alternative for bioenergy generation using bio-substrates. In this chapter, we analyze the innovations in synthetic biology as applied to cellulosic ethanol production based on registered patents issued over the last twenty years (1999–2019). Using Questel-Orbit Intelligence, we recovered a total of 298 patent families, from which we extracted the key concepts and technology clusters, the primary technological domains and applications, the geographical distribution of patents, and the leading patents assignees. Besides, we discuss the perspectives for future research and innovations and the market and policy opportunities for innovation in this technological field. We conclude that the patented technologies serve as a proxy for the development of synthetic biotechnology applied in cellulosic ethanol production by the fourth generation of biorefineries.

Biogas Potential of Agriculture

The purpose of this research is to evaluate the biogas potential of agriculture in the typical Russian region. The design of this study was completed using the main kinds of agricultural production of the Tambov region as the feedstocks for biogas production. Average amounts of the feedstocks were calculated on the base of data for the period 2009–2018. The quantities and revenues of electricity, heat, and biofertilizers from biogas produced from various substrates were estimated and mapped for each of the twenty-three municipal districts of the region. Results revealed an average total monetary biogas potential of 88.52 × 109 RUB for the Tambov region per year, where 75.43% are provided by electricity and heat energy and the remaining 24.57%—by biofertilizers, therefore, biogas potential of the Tambov region is comparable with biogas potential of a European country. Such feedstocks as sunflower silage, cereal grain, and cereal straw were defined as the most attractive substrates in the region. At the same time, the most of feedstocks being the main farmers’ commodity production are debatable to be used as substrates; as for Russian farmers, biogas production is a new and not well-known technology. Nevertheless, the developed calculation method can now be applied by local authorities of the Tambov region and other regions of the Russian Federation as the base to develop the biogas sector in the most promising areas by supporting farmers and business structures and attracting investments in biogas technology.

Abstract. The article deals with issues of transport biofuels. Transport biofuels are an important element of a system of energy security. Moreover, as part of a system it is inextricably linked to the urban, rural or industrial infrastructure. The paper discusses methods of increasing the yield of biogas from anaerobic digesters at wastewater treatment plants. The thermal hydrolysis method was considered. The main advantages and drawbacks of this method were analyzed. The experimental biomass (from SNDOD-bioreactor) and high-organic substrate have been previously studied by respirometry methods. A biomethane potential of the investigated organic substrate has high rates because of substrate composition (the readily biodegradable substrate in the total composition takes about 85%). Waste activated sludge from SNDOD-bioreactor can be used for biofuel producing with high efficiency especially with pre-treatment like a thermal hydrolysis. Further studies have to consider the possibility of withdrawing inhibitors from waste activated sludge.
