Analysis of the Decision Making Process of Flight Instructors at the Brazilian Air Force Academy (AFA)

Abstract: Motivation-Discusses the human judgment in decision making, through the analysis of the flight instructor's accuracy at the Brazilian Air Force Academy, when attributing grades to the cadets in flight training. Research approach-It is possible to increase elements to the studies of the Naturalistic Decision Making confronting the attributed grades in flight with those obtained by the cadets in an aptitude test for the military pilotage. Research limitations/Implications-This is ongoing work. A deeper exam of t… Show more

“…When the flight captain, who was not in the pilot position (in technical aviation language, PNF (pilot not flying)), found that birds had been sucked into the airplane turbines, he would have said in a clear and good tone: my aircraft. In other words, he would have applied another basic rule in aviation, which is respecting the authority of those in charge (Klein, 1998;Klein et al, 1993;Silva et al, 2009).…”

“…The main aim of this study is to start-and submit to future deepening discussion-to develop an inventory of heuristics that may be applied to the air instruction (instruction in all aspects of flying) that is provided to Brazilian Air Force Academy cadets (AFA-SP) as part of an instruction strategy that is based on adaptive behavior. In addition, this study aims to take the first step toward creating the most relevant latent variables (Pilati & Laros, 2007), highlighting the possible constructs of the basic instruction of air operations, vis-à-vis the heuristics already measured in the research on human judgment in dynamic situations and time constraints (Silva et al, 2009(Silva et al, , 2013b. The study is characterized as a literature review focused on identifying latent variables (initial construct development) for the different stages of air instruction to be consolidated according to the identification of heuristics.…”

“…It is a fully computerized psychological test, comprised of a battery of six tests that assess, either alone or in a combined manner, inherent flying skills, such as the "cognitive capacities" (e.g., information processing, speed and accuracy of responses, working memory) and the ability to "multitask" (psychomotor and cognitive combined) (COSTA, 2010, p. 6). Evidence are sought for assigning weights to the different variables intervening in the aptitude problem (SILVA et al, 2009), which brings us to choose -to date -as a featured variable, the ability to run multiple tasks. The focus in the "multitask" variable led us to new investigative lines, such as studies on human judgment in decisions, particularly those taken in dynamic environments and of great uncertainty (KLEIN, 2009), and the correlation between the ability to perform multiple tasks and impulsiveness.…”
