Analysis of the main factors influencing the energy consumption of electric vehicles

Abstract: Electric vehicles are currently a field of research with many challenges that raise the interest of many researchers. The major challenge is about the autonomy of electric vehicles, which is limited as compared to that of conventional vehicles, and thus the drivers' anxiety about reaching or not the desired destination is very important. In this paper, we propose an experimental study to understand the energy consumption of electric vehicles, and we investigate some factors that have an important impact on the… Show more

“…The road grade and the velocity profile are crucial factors affecting the energy consumption of the HEV, which was validated in a previous research [21]. To determine the target SOC for the uphill terrain, the road grade and the driving cycle need to be predicted.…”

“…Furthermore, for the real-time control strategies of PHEVs, a good vehicle performance, in terms of fuel economy, power, and battery life, cannot be ensured, if the driving conditions are not considered. The slope is proven to be an important factor that influences the fuel consumption of the HEV [21,22]. PHEVs usually operate in the hybrid-driving mode while driving uphill, and the engine and motor coordinately work together to ensure that the engine operates in the high-efficiency region.…”

“…These are major factors preventing the charging-type electric car market from vitalizing. 4 These factors result from the energy density of a battery: it stores electric energy, but its density is remarkably low compared to that of gasoline.…”

“…Finally, in the object function, these two terms are added by using weights to consider both differences in center of gravity and aspect ratio. This is summarized as an object function of a multi-objective optimization problem, expressed as formula (4). The detailed calculations for object function are shown in Fig.…”
