Analysis of the position of the branches of the ulnar nerve in Guyon’s canal using high-resolution MRI in positions adopted by cyclists

Abstract: This study shows that SB and DB positions of the ulnar nerve vary with respect to the HH depending on the position of the wrist, and such differences may promote Guyon's canal syndrome in cyclists.

“…71 MRI has also been studied to demonstrate a change in the position of both the SBUN and DBUN with respect to the hook of the hamate related to wrist position, which may promote pathology in cyclists. 72 Hypothenar hammer syndrome is related to repetitive microtrauma too, leading to thrombosis and/or aneurysm of the ulnar artery (Figure 28); the nerve may be possibly compressed as well. 73…”

“…This study shows that superficial and deep branches positions of the ulnar nerve vary with respect to the hamulus of hamate depending on the position of the wrist, and such differences may promote Guyon's canal syndrome in cyclists. 17 The strategies for minimizing nerve compression include the use of night-time elbow extension orthotic to minimize traction forces across the ulnar nerve within the cubital tunnel during elbow flexion, and a neutral wrist orthotic to reduce adverse tension across the ulnar nerve within the distal ulnar tunnel. 36 Padded gloves prevent the symptoms 4 , 16 , 20 , 37 and decrease the hypothenar pressure,.…”

“…However, at the level of the hamate, the UA is located in front of the tip of the hamulus (hook of the hamate), where it is exposed to shocks on the palm of the hand ( Fig. 1; Additional file 1: Video 1) [13,14].…”
