Analysis of the Prevalence and Incidence of Cleft Lip and Palate in Colombia

Abstract: Objective: To analyze the population prevalence and birth prevalence of oral clefts in Colombia from 2009 to 2017. Methods: A cross-sectional study using information from the National Administrative Records of Colombia. The data came from 2 types of administrative records (Surveillance System and the Individual Registry of Service Provision) and the oral health national survey. Population prevalence and birth prevalence by type of cleft lip and/or cleft (CL/P) ratios were calculated using Poisson distribution … Show more

“…For example, an analysis of cleft lip and palate in Colombia showed that the prevalence was 3.27 per 10 000 inhabitants from 2009 to 2017. 25 Also, the prevalence of the disease in Brazil was about 5.2/10 000. 26 Compared with some cities in our country, we found that the prevalence of cleft lip and/ or palate in Guangdong province was lower than that in Beijing (18.9/10 000) 9 and Gansu province (13.48/10 000).…”

“…28 For example, the prevalence was relatively high in East Asia and the pacific compared with other regions in the world. 25 In addition, the prevalence of the disease was unevenly distributed in different regions and/or ethnic groups in a single country, such as the heterogeneity of different regions in Georgia. 28 According to the WHO, the prevalence of birth defects in the Netherlands varied greatly.…”

“…In CL, this developmental abnormality occur due to the failure of the merging of the maxillary and medial nasal elevation due to inadequate migration of neural crest cells at 5 weeks’ gestational age. In CP, failure of the fusion of lateral palatine processes occurs to meet and fuse with each other (Stocum, 2001; MERRITT, 2005; Alonso & Brigetty, 2020). Fusion of palatal shelves begins at 8 weeks’ gestation and continuous usually until 12 weeks’ gestation (Bernheim et al, 2006).…”

“…The incidence of OFC has been described in epidemiological studies for many populations. [61][62][63][64][65][66][67] Time-series analysis techniques have been used to evaluate the change in OFC incidence in Slovenia over a 26-year period, with unexplained observation of cycling and clustering of cases. 68 Examples of ecological timeseries to evaluate the association of environmental exposures and health outcomes have most commonly been performed in the field of air pollution and mortality, where daily data is publicly available.…”
