“…Out of these patients, only one was submitted to urgent surgery; the others underwent elective surgery, in which the "sphincter sparing" resection could be performed, but due to the old age of the patients (mode of 80 years), with comorbidities associated with sphincter malfunctions, it was chosen to perform a definitive stoma in order to avoid the high risk of fecal incontinence. The rate of abominoperineal resections performed was 22.1% (n=33), which is within the limits described in literature, from 22 and 27% 41 , strongly influenced by the number of patients in the center.
