Analytical Model for Investigating Low-Speed Sideswipe Collisions

Abstract: Vehicle dynamics in sideswipe collisions are markedly different from other types of collisions. Sideswipe collisions are characterized by prolonged sliding contact, often with very little structural deformation. An analytical model was developed to investigate the vehicle dynamics of sideswipe collisions. The vehicles were modeled as rigid bodies, and lateral interaction between the vehicles was modeled with a linear elastic spring. This linear spring was meant to represent the combined lateral stiffness of bo… Show more

“…The paper also considers occupant response through the use of the vibration dose value (VDV). Two papers [7,8] present models of sideswipe collisions including validation to test data. The approach used in each paper to model the tangential interaction between the vehicles during contact is Coulomb friction.…”

“…While previous studies have revealed that flashing amber signals do not increase the number of conflicts in intersections [30], flashing yellow signals in Taiwan had no significant effect on ambulance crashes. Vehicle dynamics in sideswipe collisions are markedly different from other types of collisions [31]. However, no evidence was found in the sideswipe injuries of Taiwan ambulance crashes.…”
