Analytical Modeling of Magnetic Air-Gap Field Distribution Due to Armature Reaction

Abstract: The following paper presents an analytical study of the air-gap magnetic field distribution produced by the armature reaction of a linear machine. Based on the method of images, the magnetic field generated by a current carrying conductor inside the air-gap between two smooth infinitely permeable iron surfaces is modeled as a complex 2D function. The conductor model then becomes a current sheet model and horizontally oriented current sheets are used to model the magnetic field produced by the armature reaction… Show more

“…The slotted condition is then considered through a complex airgap permeance function. Then, authors extend the work by analysing the airgap magnetic field distribution due to armature reaction and due to the permanent magnets arranged in an Halbach array, in [46], [48], respectively. Results show that the analytical approach matches almost everywhere the FEM results.…”

“…In [22], the magnetic field distribution generated by a surface permanent magnet inside the air gap of a linear slotted machine has been investigated, and in [23], the air-gap field distribution has been obtained for the armature reaction, due to stator windings. Both the models were created via an analytical approach based on the method of images [24].…”

“…A precise estimation of the air gap field inside electrical machines is really important in order to properly estimate local and integral quantities and thus predict machine performance. Most of the methods used in the literature start with the study of the air gap field between smooth ferromagnetic surfaces (slotless approach) [1][2][3][4][5][6] and subsequently, the effect on the field due to the presence of slotting is introduced, making use of a slotting function which can also be called the air gap relative permeance function.…”
