Analytical Strategies in Lipidomics for Discovery of Functional Biomarkers from Human Saliva

Abstract: Human saliva is increasingly being used and validated as a biofluid for diagnosing, monitoring systemic disease status, and predicting disease progression. The discovery of biomarkers in saliva biofluid offers unique opportunities to bypass the invasive procedure of blood sampling by using oral fluids to evaluate the health condition of a patient. Saliva biofluid is clinically relevant since its components can be found in plasma. As salivary lipids are among the most essential cellular components of human sali… Show more

“…Thus, identification of a lipidomic signature may be relevant to detect potential diagnostic, prognostic, and predictive biomarkers in various diseases [33]. Moreover, the study of the concentrations of a subset of lipids in human disease can shed light into cellular processes and unravel alterations in one or more pathways [34].…”

“…In humans the composition of the saliva metabolome is a promising diagnostic tool for systemic diseases as well as oral problems, and investigation of the saliva metabolome has even resulted in the development of a specific field known as salivaomics (13). Studies in this area have yielded important information about caries, oral cancer, and systemic conditions (14)(15)(16). Due to the ease of sample collection the metabolomic study of saliva may become an important diagnostic tool in the future (17).…”

“…Since then, a systematic increase in interest in this field has been observed, which translates into the number of articles published (Figure 1). Thanks to the development of technology, new methodological and technical solutions, lipidomics is becoming an attractive branch of metabolomics (Figure 2) [6], which allows learning about cell lipid conditions. Linking the lipid composition with changes in the body enables the identification of metabolic pathways.…”
