“…Gumpert and Kraybill-Greggo (2005) administered the Atherton questionnaire as a pretest/posttest to measure change in attitudes among undergraduates who participated in intensive service trips that involved working directly with impoverished people. To evaluate the impact of social work courses on attitudes toward poverty, Weaver and Yun (2011) administered the Atherton scale to 166 undergraduate students enrolled in three different courses at a Canadian university. They modified 2 items in the scale, replacing the phrase ''food stamps'' with ''welfare benefits'' to use language befitting the Canadian welfare state.…”

“…In comparison with non-poor adults, poor adults are more likely to be employed in dangerous occupations and reside in neighborhoods that are closely located to toxic waste sites. Poverty also has a negative impact on infants and children, as it is positively associated with the rate of low birth-weight and malnourished babies that, consequently, heightens their proclivity for later being plagued with serious illnesses (Rapheal, 2007;Weaver & Yun, 2011). Alongside these detrimental effects on individuals, the costs associated with poverty can have a negative impact on a nation or region's overall economic climate.…”
