Analyzing the Dynamics of Communication in Online Social Networks

Abstract: The outcomes of this research are manifold. I present the contributions in three parts, corresponding to the three key organizing ideas. First, it is observed that user context is key to characterizing communication between a pair of individuals. However interestingly, the probability of future communication seems to be i more sensitive to the context compared to the delay, which appears to be rather habitual. Further, it is observed that diffusion of social actions in a network can be indicative of future inf… Show more

“…With the increasing expansion of social media networks, our capacity to interact, collaborate, and network has highly and rapidly increased [29]. In this context, research in a number of academic fields that involve both the transformation of noisy raw data and the design of analysis methods has shown the incredible predictive power of SM, and more concretely Twitter, to forecast political reactions [30] or disease outbreaks [31].…”

“…We classify all the measures into four groups: (1) tie strength, (2) local network activity, (3) whole network size, and (4) user profile, referring to the previous literature and considering our research site.…”

“…The number of Facebook users is expected to exceed 1 billion in 2013. Given the phenomenal online/mobile social network activities, previous studies have been exploring a social network structure (the interactivity among users and their network formation) as an emergent property of social interactions [1,2] and/or the managerial implication of the social relations as its economic outcome [3][4][5][6].…”

“…This last condition is, today, a determining factor. Indeed, the strong development of the social networks has led to stronger intertwined dynamic bonds between individuals (De Choudhury, ). The number of bonds will have an impact on the growth of the streaming, while the speed of the interactions will reduce the time for an individual to create internal information, thus inciting the individual to take into account the external information.…”
