Introduction: aging appears as a progressive and continuous process of natural change that begins in early adulthood. In particular, Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a brain neurodegenerative pathology determined by confusion, impaired memory, attention and the ability to reason.Objective: to identify the relationship between cognitive alterations and depression in Alzheimer’s patients in Ecuador.Methodology: this research has a bibliographic, descriptive and qualitative documentary approach. The following inclusion criteria were considered: cross-sectional, prospective and retrospective studies.Results: the prevalence of Alzheimer’s in Ecuador by sex is 65 % in women and 35 % in men, 35 % occurs between 60 to 65 years of age and 20 % between 66 to 71 years. Among the risk factors, age 30 %, cardiovascular diseases 20 % and 18 % due to emotional problems stand out. With 1 7% accompanied by diseases with cognitive impairment and depression, 29 % are caused by heart disease, 20 % by diabetes and 18 % by lung disease.Conclusion: the relationship between cognitive alterations in Alzheimer’s patients and depression in Ecuador is worrying. Although more studies are needed, including longitudinal studies. Indeed, clarifying these relationships will allow the design of early detection and intervention strategies in the older adult population.
