Anatomical location of the spinothalamic tract in the subcortical white matter in the human brain: A diffusion tensor imaging study

Abstract: Introduction We investigated the anatomical location of the spinothalamic tract and its thalamocortical pathway (STT) in the subcortical white matter in normal subjects, using diffusion tensor tractography (DTT). Materials and Methods The STT was reconstructed using FMRIB software in 40 normal subjects. The most probable locations of the STT were defined as the location on an axial slice of the centrum semiovale (CS), corona radiata (CR), and posterior limb of the internal capsule (PL). Results The STT was loc… Show more

“… 21 However, in this study, the entire CST was not estimated like our study because the FA value was measured 2-dimensionally in the corona radiate, which contains other neural tracts such as the corticoreticular tract and spinothalamic tract as well as the CST. 32 , 33 In addition, their results were different with our results. As a result, to the best of our knowledge, the present study is the first to demonstrate a relation between the ipsilesional CST state and ADL independence, which was estimated the entire CST using DTT in patients with chronic ICH.…”

“… 29 In the clinical application of DTI/DTT to visualize the STT in patients with CPSP, the STT and its thalamocortical pathway were observed from the medulla oblongata to the subcortical white matter. 30 , 31 Using imaging techniques in clinic settings, partial damage to the STT was observed, with preservation, rather than disruption, of the integrity of the fiber tract more likely leading to CPSP. 32 This is consistent with the concept proposed by Wasner et al that “the partially preserved STT acts as a central pain generator”.…”

“…As one of the important components of fMRI, DTI can quantitatively analyze the diffusion movement of water molecules in tissues in three-dimensional space compared with DWI. Due to the anisotropic characteristics of water diffusion in tissues, it can show different tissue structures, which is of great significance in the study of white matter fiber bundles in the brain [8,9]. FA value and MD value, as two quantitative indexes of DTI, have been used many times in previous studies.…”
