Anatomy of the superficial temporal artery and its branches: its importance for surgery

Abstract: The temporoparietal, parieto-occipital flaps or the forehead flaps that are used in reconstructive surgery are prepared on the superficial temporal artery (STA) and its branches. For a successful surgery and a suitable flap design, adequate anatomical knowledge is needed. In our study, the red colored latex solution was injected into the external carotid artery; the STA and its branches were dissected in 27 specimens. The mean diameter of the STA at the zygomatic arch was determined as 2.73+/-0.51 mm. The diam… Show more

“…The diameters of the second-division segments approximated that of the M 1 (range 2.7-4.9 mm), 33 petrous ICA (range 3.8-5.6 mm), 3 and vertebral artery (range 2.5-4.0 mm). The diameters of the third-division segments were close to those of the ACA (range 1.0-3.0 mm), 34 M 2 -M 4 segments (range 0.8-3.5 mm), 34 STA (range 1.0-2.7 mm), 27 posterior inferior cerebellar artery (PICA) (range 0.6-1.8 mm), 34 and maxillary artery (mean ± standard deviation 2.8 ± 0.1 mm). 8 The media of the human placental arteries has a loose reticular framework and smooth muscle cells.…”

“…The overall mass and villous surface of the bovine placenta is roughly 10 times larger than the human placenta. 27,34 Bovine placenta has 3 types of arterial branching patterns: a large artery that branches perpendicularly in regular intervals of 5 to 6 cm; a large artery that gradually divides in an alternative tree-like pattern; and smaller branches that divide in a dichotomous fashion to supply 1 to 2 separate cotyledons. Arterial anastomoses were not found between separate cotyledons in the examined placentas.…”

“…In some cases, pulsation may be absent if there is complete thrombosis of the aneurysmal sac. Its differential diagnosis is broad and includes hematoma, lipoma, cyst, abscess, angiofibroma, arteriovenous fistula, meningocele, and encephalocele [5,6].…”

“…The expansion of CTG triplet repeats in DM1 arise within the 3' untranslated region of the DMPK gene, 2,3 but this region also overlaps downstream with the promoter of the homeobox gene SIX5 on chromosome 19q13.3. 4 As expression of this gene has been localized to the lens, retina, and choroid, it has been …”
