Ancient BED-domain-containing immune receptor from wild barley confers widely effective resistance to leaf rust

Abstract: Leaf rust, caused by Puccinia hordei is a devastating fungal disease affecting barley (Hordeum vulgare subsp. vulgare) production globally. Race-specific resistance (R) genes have been deployed widely; however, their durability is often compromised due to the rapid emergence of virulent P. hordei races, prompting the search for new sources of broad-spectrum resistance. Here we report on the cloning of Rph15, a broadly effective resistance gene derived from the wild progenitor Hordeum vulgare subsp. spontaneum.… Show more

“…Differential expression of AC Cadillac to non-TTKSK Pgt races compared to Norin 40 is due to the existence of background genes like Lr34. Cloning of Rph15 in barley confirmed that Rph15 and Rph16 are allelic or the same (Chen C. et al, 2020).…”

“…tritici) and leaf or brown rust (Puccinia triticina) is indeed a potential biotic restraint, damaging the crop and causing substantial economic losses worldwide (Ali et al 2017;Kumar et al 2020;Meyer et al 2021). The stripe rust is continuing to be a serious threat and dominant factor limiting yield potential in wheat globally (Chen et al 2014(Chen et al , 2020. Severe and extensive epidemics occur about once in every 10 years, and yield losses due to stripe rust have been estimated from 10-70%, while in severe epidemic losses can be as great as 100% (Chen 2005;Chen et al 2020;Aggarwal et al 2018;Bhardwaj et al 2022).…”

“…For instance, multiple resistance proteins contain a Zf-BED domain, conferring resistance to various biotic stresses [17]. The Zf-BED domains also associate with the Nod-like receptor (NLR) proteins either at the N-or C-termini [18][19][20][21]. As such, NLR proteins play critical roles in plant immune systems [22][23][24].…”
