Androgen receptor gene polymorphism and polycystic ovary syndrome

Abstract: Polymorphism of the AR gene seems to be a promising biomarker for PCOS because shorter repeats may be linked to the disorder. However, further studies are needed to understand the association fully.

“…Compared to healthy women, patients with ovarian cancer have high levels of circulating androgen before the disease diagnosis, and ARs are usually detected in most ovarian cancer patients (38). A study about the association of AR gene polymorphism and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) revealed that shorter CAG repeat length was associated with the higher risk of PCOS (39). Moreover, women with PCOS under 54 years of age had an increased risk of developing ovarian cancer (OR = 2.52, 95%CI = 1.08-5.89) (40), suggesting that abnormal CAG repeat length might contribute to ovarian cancer through inducing PCOS.…”

“…21,22 Hyoun et al 22 reported a 37-year old woman who gave birth to a child with cAIS diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome (PcOS), probably due to a heterozygous AR mutation. In contrast, the mother of our patient had a heterozygous AR mutation not previously described in polycystic ovary syndrome.…”
