The purpose of the study was to evaluate the effects of age on blood count, liver enzymes alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT), glycemia and on protein profile in mixed-breed cats during the neonatal phase. Twenty male and female cats were used from 3 to 38 days after birth. Weekly blood samples were obtained and laboratory analyses (blood count, liver enzymes, glycemia and protein profile) were performed on the 3 rd , 10 th , 17 th , 24 th , 31 st and 38 th day of age. The results exhibited significant effect of age on total red blood cell count, hemoglobin concentration, packed cell volume, mean cell volume, mean cell hemoglobin concentration, total leukocyte count, mean segmented neutrophils, eosinophils and basophils. No effect was observed in lymphocyte, monocyte and glucose concentration. The analysis of changes in laboratory parameters which occurred during the neonatal period reflects the physiological development of the kitten and contributes to knowledge of the adaptive process in neonates cats during the first month of life, and is useful for clinical assessment, diagnosis and treatment of neonatal diseases.

“…Domestic cats are known to be peculiarly susceptible to hypoxia (Reeves et al, 1963) and when made anemic experimentally, modify oxygen delivery by synthesizing increased (although still low) amounts of DPG as well as the normally minor hemoglobin B that has a high oxygen affinity and is insensitive to phosphate (Mauk et al, 1974). In response to hypoxia or anemia, goats and some sheep turn on a normally unexpressed gene resulting in the synthesis of hemoglobin C, with presumably advantageous properties (Huisman et al, 1969).…”

Comparative studies of red cells 2, 3 Diphosphoglycerate (DPG) and its effect on hemoglobin oxygen affinity from a taxonomically diverse set of mammals indicate two anomalous groups: members of the superfamilies Bovoidea (Actiodactyla) and Feloidea (Carnivora). In both taxa all of the individuals assayed had very low or unmeasurable quantities of DPG and red cell lysates with little, if any, DPG effect as measured by the change in oxygen affinity in the absence and presence of the phosphate. However, in both groups compensatory changes have occurred in hemoglobin structure and function so as to reduce the native oxygen affinity and thus cause them to resemble the hemoglobins of DPG-utilizing mammals as they occur in the setting of the red cell. We conclude that this parallelism of function is the result of convergent evolution.

Recent evidence has suggested, moreover, that the haem-haem interaction found in some human diseases (Astrup, 1964;Neville & Clemmer, 1g75), as well as with phenylhydrazineinduced anaemia in cats (Mauk et al, 1974), is significantly altered and values near or below 2.0 have been observed. Edwards & Rigas (1967) originally reported differences in Hill slopes based on erythrocyte age, lower cooperativity being associated with older cells, and thus one might infer from this that altering the usual pattern of haematopoiesis could also alter the cooperativity.…”

On the basis of its assumed invariance, the haem--haem interaction or shape of the oxyhaemoglobin dissociation curve is frequently ignored when considering the potential effect of haemoglobin-oxygen affinity (as characterized by the P50) on oxygen transport. This report reviews some experimental evidence with respect to this assumption and demonstrates the potential effect of altered haem--haem interaction on tissue-oxygen supply as distinguished from the effect of P50 or position change. Theoretically, haem--haem interaction values in the range that has been reported for apparently healthy human subjects can substantially modify oxygen transport to tissues, in some cases equalling or exceeding the effect from a similar range of P50 values. It is not presently clear to what extent this range may represent true variation as opposed to random technical error, but the possible implications for oxygen transport indicate that a more systematic evaluation of the problem is desirable.
