Angiolipoma on the Lumbar Spine

Abstract: Angiolipomas are composed of mature adipose tissue and blood vessels. Spinal angiolipomas are rare benign tumors with a good prognosis, and most symptoms are due to progressive compression of the spinal cord and root. The treatment of choice is total resection without any additional therapy. We report a case of an epidural angiolipoma on the lumbar spine in a 69-year-old man with weakness of the lower extremities. Lumbar magnetic resonance images revealed a well-enhanced epidural mass. He underwent laminectomy… Show more

“…The standard treatment for both non-infiltrating and infiltrating SALs is total surgical resection of the lesion via an anterior approach, posterior laminectomy, or microsurgery. 18 , 50 , 51 In the current cases, we carried out total surgical resection of the lesions via a posterior approach, with resolution of the presenting symptoms. However, the posterior column structures, especially the supraspinal ligaments and interspinal ligaments that play an important role in maintaining the stability of the spine, were destroyed during surgery, and we therefore used internal fixation devices to stabilize the spine in both cases.…”

“…Less than 200 cases were reported until 2020 2 . Although there are some SAL reports in the lower cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine, they tend to settle, especially in the mid-thoracic region 3,4 . They present with gradually increasing symptoms in accordance with the degree of cord compression, unless intratumoral bleeding or venous thrombosis occurs 4 .…”

“…However, sometimes, symptoms can rise rapidly because of intratumor hemorrhage and venous thrombosis. Most SAL have a good prognosis after surgical resection [ 3 ]. We report a case of spinal angiolipoma discovered after one -year-period of complete paraplegia, in which treatment using surgical removal resulted in an unexpected good outcome.…”
