Angiomyofibroblastoma of the spermatic cord

Abstract: A 51-year-old man presented with a right inguinal painless mass that had been growing slowly for 1 year. At operation, a 5 cm well-circumscribed solid tumour was found adherent to the spermatic cord. The testis and epididymis were not involved. Microscopically, the tumour was well circumscribed with abundant thickwalled blood vessels arranged haphazardly (Fig. 1). The stromal cells were bland-looking spindle-shaped or oval with moderate eosinophilic cytoplasm (Fig. 2). The nuclei were oval, with fine chromatin… Show more

“…Recently, tumors in the male genitalia, mimicking female AMFB, were also described under the name of AMFB‐like tumors 13 . To date, 17 cases of male AMFB or AMFB‐like tumor have been reported 9–14 . The inguinal region is the most frequent site, followed by the scrotum and perineum and they rarely arise from the spermatic cord or pararectal region 9–14 .…”

“…Regarding the surgical management of these rare neoplasms (AMF and AAM), the most important factor for prognosis is the surgical and macroscopic delimitation of the tumor. Because most AMFs have been successfully treated with simple excision, this seems to be the appropriate therapy for these tumors [1-6]. After histological examination, wide excision is meanwhile required in cases of AAM because of the propensity of the latter for local recurrence [10].…”

“…The morphologic hallmarks of this tumor were its well-circumscribed margins, prominent vascularity and features suggestive of myofibroblastic differentiation [1]. Since the aforementioned original study, there have been several additional reports of AMF of the genital tracts of both men [2,3] and women [4,5], but only a single case of this tumor arising from the spermatic cord [6]. The purpose of this study is to expand the experience with AMF by describing the second case of the latter unusual location of this rare lesion and providing a long period of follow-up.…”

“…For the male genital tract, a counterpart of an entity described in the vulva [2]. Subsequent to the initial reports, additional cases have been cited in the literature [3][4][5][6] in both sexes. Of the 14 reported cases in males [1,3,6], the AMF-like tumors were located in the scrotum (50%), inguinal area (43%), and spermatic cord (7%).…”
