Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitory peptides and isoflavonoids from soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.]

Abstract: Angiotensin-converting enzyme I (ACE I) is a zinc-containing metallopeptidase involved in the renin-angiotensin system (RAAS) that helps in the regulation of hypertension and maintains fluid balance otherwise, which results in cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). One of the leading reasons of global deaths is due to CVDs. RAAS also plays a central role in maintaining homeostasis of the CV system. The commercial drugs available to treat CVDs possess several fatal side effects. Hence, phytochemicals like peptides hav… Show more

“…Besides, Bacillus species extracted from traditional fermented foods were applied to soybean meal to produce new bioactive peptides, which could be used as nutritional products (Kumari et al, 2023). Ramlal et al (2022) successfully obtained angiotensin-I-converting enzyme-inhibiting peptides from fermented soybean meal and applied them to the manufacture of new nutritionally fortified foods.…”

“…They typically comprise 2–20 amino acid residues. ACEIPs can prevent the formation of angiotensin II and promote the production of bradykinin and enkephalin by binding to ACE, thus exhibiting antihypertensive effects (Grden & Jakubczyk, 2023; Ramlal et al., 2023; Ren, 2021). Some researchers suggest that ACEIPs derived from food sources can potentially serve as alternative therapies for patients with hypertension or related disorders (Chang et al., 2023; Kralova et al., 2023; Yang et al., 2023).…”

“…Soybean is widely grown and consumed globally and constitutes nearly 28% of vegetable oil and 70% of protein meals worldwide ( SoyStats, 2021 ). Because of its great nutritional content, it is used in both human food and animal feed ( Ramlal et al., 2022a ; 2022b ). Besides, it is used in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries.…”
