Response Surface Methodology for Boron Removal by Donnan Dialysis: Doehlert Experimental Design

The removal of boron by Donnan dialysis from aqueous solutions has been studied according to response surface methodology (RSM). First, a preliminary study was performed with two membranes (AFN and ACS) in order to determine the experimental field based on different parameters, such as the pH of the feed compartment, the concentration of counter-ions in the receiver compartment, and the concentration of boron in the feed compartment. The best removal rate of boron was 75% with the AFN membrane, but only 48% with the ACS membrane. Then, a full-factor design was developed to determine the influence of these parameters and their interactions on the removal of boron by Donnan dialysis. The pH of the feed compartment was found to be the most important parameter. The RSM was applied according to the Doehlert model to determine the optimum conditions ([B] = 66 mg/L, pH = 11.6 and [Cl–] = 0.5 mol/L) leading to 88.8% of boron removal with an AFN membrane. The use of the RSM can be considered a good solution to determine the optimum condition for 13.8% compared to the traditional “one-at-a-time” method.

Macroporous polypropylene (MPP) membranes incorporating poly[sodium (styrene sulphonate)], P(SSNa), and poly[(ar-vinylbenzyl) trimethylammonium chloride],P(ClVBTA) were modified via "in situ" radical polymerization. Modified and unmodified MPP were characterized using SEM and charge density properties. Donnan dialysis was used to transport chromium ions. The results show that the degree of modification varied between 2.5% and 4.0%, and the water uptake percentage varied between 15% and 20%. Experimental data for chromium ion transport (Cr(III) and Cr(VI)) were fitted to a mathematical model, and a correlation coefficient very close to 1 was obtained. The main parameters of this mathematical fit are k and a. These parameters report the concentration of chromium ions that converge in the Donnan equilibrium (k) and the response rate of the modified membrane (a).

Polypropylene (PP) membranes incorporating poly [(ar-vinylbenzyl) trimethylammonium chloride] P(ClVBTA), and poly[sodium (styrene sulfonate)] P(SSNa) were modified via an "in situ" radical polymerization synthesis. Two methods were used for impregnation of the reactive solution: pressure injection and plasma superficial activation with argon gas. The following conditions were varied: the monomer concentrations, number of injections, and cross-linked concentration. The modified polypropylene membranes were then characterized using scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy, electrokinetic potential, and Donnan dialysis for the chromium ions transport. The modified membranes exhibited a hydrophilic character with a water uptake capacity between 15% and 20% and a percent modification between 2.5% and 4.0%. This was compared with the results of an unmodified polypropylene membrane as the blank and the mentioned polypropylene membrane has not the capacity to uptake water because this kind of material is highly hydrophobic. Hexavalent chromium ions were efficiently transported by the modified membranes containing P(ClVBTA) via a plasma method and it achieved 59.2% extraction at pH 9.0 using a 1-mol L 21 NaCl extraction agent. Therefore, unmodified polypropylene membrane shows an extraction percentage close to 10% from the hexavalent chromium ions at pH 9.0. In the same way, the trivalent chromium transport using membranes modified with P(SSNa) achieved 49.0% extraction at pH 2.0 using 1 3 10 21 mol L 21 HNO 3 and 1 mol L 21 NaCl as the extraction agents. Moreover, the unmodified polypropylene membrane reached a value close to 10% from the trivalent chromium ions using 1 3 10 21 mol L 21 HNO 3 and 1 mol L 21 NaCl.
