“…Unlike in the case of the pristine δ-MnO 2 , where well-resolved lattices fringes were observed along the (001) plane of the nanostrand (Figure c), a reduction in lattice periodicity and long-range order was observed in the doped catalysts (Figure f,i). This could be attributable to structural defects due to lattice distortions, , possibly resulting from incorporation of the dopants into the lattice structure of δ-MnO 2 . A higher degree of lattice distortion was observed on 0.05Co-δ-MnO 2 compared to 0.05Cu-δ-MnO 2 , likely indicating a higher level of Co incorporation.…”

“…Also, SiO 2 is used as a support to increase the specific surface area. Accordingly, using a mixture of glass powder, as a main constituent of SiO 2 , with TiO 2 often leads to an increase in the surface area and could improve the photocatalytic activity of the final produced catalyst (Zhang et al 1998;Strauss et al 2011;Mahltig et al 2011). Results in Table 7.1 revealed that high removal efficiency of all heavy metals (Pb, Cd, Cu and Zn) was observed when using the modified catalyst (GB/TiO 2 ), while the GB adsorbent showed less removal efficiency of the metals.…”

“… 7,8 These synthesis routes usually proceed through the formation of an amorphous phase, which then requires higher-temperature treatment and the use of additives to form nanocrystalline phases of titania. 9 …”
