ABSTRACT:The effect of a crude extract of Annona crassiflora was evaluated on larvae of the soybean looper, Chrysodeixis includens (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) in different stages of larval development.The extract was prepared with seeds of A. crassiflora fruits collected in the state of Mato Grosso, Brazil. The extract was diluted in water and solubilizer agent at the concentrations of 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, 4.0, and 8.0%; it was tested by ingestion of treated leaves and contact. The mortality rate of topically treated caterpillars of first, third, and fifth instars was significantly higher than that of the control group. For first instar caterpillars, mortality was observed within the first 24 h after application, while, for the remaining instars, it was significant after 72 h. For caterpillars fed treated leaves, no differences in mortality rates were observed within the first 120 h. These caterpillars were monitored until the end of the larval stage, during which mortality rates increased for first and third instar caterpillars. The mortality rate of fifth instar larvae was not significantly different between treatments. The treatment by ingestion was not efficient over a short period of time, but reduced the number of caterpillars that completed their development, decreasing the number of insects in the following generation. We concluded that the crude extract of A. crassiflora affected the development of C. PLANT PROTECTION -includens and is a promising compound for the control of this pest.

The application of botanical pesticide is a positive long term approach to control S. frugiperda. Shallot leaves contain acetogenin compound, hence it has the potential to become botanical pesticide. This study is aimed at finding out the effects of ethanolic extract of shallot leaves on S. frugiperda larvae in vitro. Extract is prepared using maceration method with ethanol solvent. The method of treatment is Leaf Dipping. The study applies Completely Randomized Design with concentration of shallot leaf extract as treatment at 0 ppm, 250 ppm, 500 ppm, 750 ppm dan 1000 ppm. Each treatment consists of four repetitions. Examination is conducted for 24 hours. Examination parameter is mortality of larvae and LC50. Data are analyzed with One Way ANOVA (proceeded with LSD) and Probit analysis. The results suggest that shallot leaf extract at the concentration of 1000 ppm appears to be the most effective on the mortality of larvae. The obtained LC50 value is 263,02 ppm. The study indicates that shallot leaf extract can be applied as an alternative synthetic insecticide to control ini S. frugiperda.

The resistance of pests to insecticides and the high costs of pest control have prompted a search for less harmful alternatives to the environment. Phytoinsecticides can be a promising option in the control of pests. The insecticidal properties of the essential oil of Piper aduncum L. (Piperaceae) have been demonstrated by several authors. This study was aimed at evaluating the insecticidal activity of P. aduncum essential oil on caterpillars of the soybean looper, Chrysodeixis includens Walker. Two bioassays were conducted: The first was based on the ingestion of treated leaves, while the second, on direct contact. Chromatography was performed, and the resulting oil was used to treat larvae fed cotton leaves at the concentrations of 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, 4.0, and 8.0%. The controls consisted of water and acetone. The first assessment was carried out 24 h after the application. The main compounds identified by chromatography were dillapiole, myristicin, and Z-carpacin. In the ingestion bioassay, mortality reached 90% for the highest concentration in the first 24 h after application. For the topical application of P. aduncum essential oil, no significant differences were observed until the end of the life cycle of C. includens. This study demonstrates the insecticidal activity essential oil of P. aduncum on C. includens and its potential in the control of this insect by ingestion.
