Annotated expressed sequence tags and xenobiotic detoxification in the aphid Myzus persicae (Sulzer)

Abstract: Aphids (Hemiptera: Aphididae) are phytophagous insects that are important agricultural pests. The enormous negative economic impacts caused by aphids worldwide are well known, and are mostly due to their high multiplication rate and the transmission of phytopathogenic viruses. Aphid management strategies mainly involve chemical treatments which are pollutants and are increasingly inefficient, since aphids have developed multiple insecticide-resistant mechanisms. Among the most economically important species is… Show more

“…Some cuticular as well as some signalling proteins have been shown to be regulated by the photoperiod in the pea aphid (Le Trionnaire et al, 2007). Recently, in the frame of the International Aphid Genomic Consortium, a large number of expressed sequence tags (ESTs) have been obtained from standard cDNA libraries (Hunter et al, 2003;Tagu et al, 2004;Figueroa et al, 2007), with a particular effort on the pea aphid (A. pisum) (SabaterMuñoz et al, 2006) for which the full assembled genome sequence will be soon available.…”

“…With regard to other aphid species, different collections of ESTs have been obtained in Myzus persicae (tribe: Macrosiphini) (Figueroa et al, 2007;Ramsey & Al, 2007) and also in two species of the Aphidini tribe, Toxoptera citricida and Aphis gossypii (Hunter et al, 2003). Most of these ESTs have already been described in order to identify organ-specific expression patterns and, in particular, the genes involved in feeding.…”

“…In particular, EST libraries have been constructed for several species [11,12], and the full genome of the pea aphid Acyrthosiphon pisum has recently been sequenced and assembled, with the annotation in progress (http://genouest.org/cgi-bin/gbrowse/gbrowse/aphidbase). Furthermore, the essential role of one gene expressed in the salivary glands has been revealed by the premature death of plant-reared pea aphids in which the transcript of this gene was selectively suppressed by RNAi [13].…”
