The method of anodic oxidation of aluminum films itself was already known and used industrially since the beginning of the previous century; however, it was only with the emergence of modern nanoscopic imaging techniques, that its self-ordering properties of nanopores and, thus, the full potential for the upcoming nanotechnology was discovered.
