Antarctic and Sub-Antarctic Seabirds in South America: A Review

Abstract: We analyzed reports of Antarctic and Sub-Antarctic seabirds with migration routes over seven South American countries (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, Peru, Uruguay, and Venezuela). Forty-eight species were reported, observed over oceanic and/or coastal areas. Chile presented the highest number of Antarctic seabird species (39), followed closely by Brazil (38). Diomedea exulans, D. epomophora, Thalassarche melanophris, Macronectes giganteus, Fulmarus glacialoides, Pachyptila desolota and Oceanites oceanicus… Show more

“…erefore, this high productivity stimulates the presence of many bird species in this area. ere are 38 south migrant species occurring over the continental shelf waters o Brazil mainly during the austral winter period, most of them belonging to the order Procellariiformes composed of albatrosses and petrels (Costa et al, 2011). Individuals belonging to this order show long lifespan and high reproductive rate (Furness & Monaghan, 1987).…”

“…However, South America also harbours important breeding sites for seabirds (e.g. Yorio et al 1999;Simeone et al 2003) and oceanic and/or coastal areas offer wintering sites for Antarctic and Sub-Antarctic seabirds (reviewed by Costa et al 2011) as well as Northern Hemisphere seabirds (e.g. Spear & Ainley 2008).…”
