Anterior Cervical Corpectomy and Fusion for Degenerative and Traumatic Spine Disorders, Single-Center Experience of a Case Series of 119 Patients

Abstract: BACKGROUND Anterior cervical corpectomy and fusion (ACCF) is a treatment option for several cervical pathologies. Various graft materials such as autografts, titanium mesh cages (TMC), or poly-ether-ether-ketone (PEEK) cages are used. Additional posterior fixation (PF) to provide extra support and improve stability is sometimes performed initially, or later as supplementary treatment. OBJECTIVE To describe our retrospective s… Show more

“…In the study group, 2 complications were noted in the form of postoperative hematoma and C5 radiculopathy. 4 In a multicenter study, 114 patients with multilevel stenosis were treated with corpectomy, reconstructed with autologous bone and plate, and a titanium expandable prosthesis with a plate or a titanium mesh cage filled with autologous bone and a plate. A total of 12 mo postoperatively, according to the Nurick scale, 73 patients achieved partial improvement and 41 showed complete improvement.…”

“…Although some patient risk factors such as osteoporosis, diabetes, and smoking status that have been associated with poorer outcomes can be treated before surgical intervention, other patient characteristics are not modifiable or are indeed part of the indication for the surgical procedure. 11,14 Patients who are undergoing procedures for the treatment of osteomyelitis or tumor tend to have graft failure rates and longer hospital stays than those having elective treatment for degenerative CSM or even than those treated for trauma 6,17,20 and therefore their hospital team and family should be made aware of the predisposition to extended hospitalization, need for surgical revision and increased risk of mortality.…”

“…Anterior cervical corpectomy and fusion is a commonly used anterior approach, whilst posterior total laminectomy is a commonly used posterior surgical approach [ 13 , 14 ]. These surgical methods have respective advantages and disadvantages, yet few reports have compared the efficacy of these approaches in the treatment of cervical spinal cord injury.…”
