Anthelmintic activity of the ethanolic extract of Carapa guianensis (Meliaceae) on gastrointestinal nematodes of sheep in the Western Amazon

Abstract: The present study aimed to evaluate the anthelmintic effect of Carapa guianensis (andiroba) on gastrointestinal nematodes in sheep naturally infected in the Western Amazon. Toxicity tests with Artemia salina identified that the ethanolic extracts of the root and stem of andiroba showed an LC50% equal to 530 μg ml-1 and 170 μg ml-1, respectively. As concentrations 1.06mg / ml (andiroba root) and 0.34mg ml-1 (andiroba stem) were tested in groups of crossbred sheep, eaten from four to six months and weighing appr… Show more

“…Andiroba oil is routinely used in the Amazon region as a therapy in veterinary medicine, in various conditions, with therapeutic action, helping in wound healing, anthelmintic, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory cases, among others, related to the effects of fatty acids and tetranortriterpenoids present in the oil (Souza et al, 2017;Amorim et al, 2021). We believe that these components may be related to the reduction of POA in AAG ewes, due to their anti-inflammatory actions.…”

“…In general, a natural product is considered toxic when its lethal concentration is less than 1000 µg/mL, within 24 h 29 . It is noteworthy that this 24-h period is standard in several studies 29 , 31 33 . However, in the present study, toxicity was observed after 48 h of incubation in all treatments.…”

“…Countless researchers use tests with A. salina Leach as an effective bioassay for the elucidation of lethal dosages of bioactive components present in natural products that are screened for different purposes [29][30][31][32] , owing to their speed, low cost, and reliability of results 29 . In general, a natural product is considered toxic when its lethal concentration is less than 1000 µg/mL, within 24 h 29 .…”
